Music for everyone on World Music Day
Today is World Music Day, an international festival held every year on 21 June, the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere. World Music Day aims to promote music in two ways: firstly, amateur musicians are encouraged to take to the streets to play their music, and secondly, many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to all sectors of the public. World Music Day was started in 1981 by Jack Lang when he was French Minister of Culture.

The festival encompasses all kinds of musical genres and caters for all kinds of audiences, with the intention of popularising music and fostering a love of music in young people and adults of all social classes through different forms of musical expression. The concept of open-air live music really comes into its own in this festival, with music being played in streets, squares, parks, gardens, building courtyards, museums and so on. All through the day, musicians offer to play free of charge and performances are open to everyone. World Music Day is proof of the power and vitality of music, both for the thousands of musicians who take part and for the millions of people of all ages and social classes who make up their audiences.
